DREAMS AND THE THIRD REICH – SHADOWS WITHIN OUR CULTURAL UNCONSCIOUS
Amanda Rubin is currently developing a film based on Charlotte Beradt’s book, The Third Reich of Dreams. Beradt was a Berlin-based journalist who collected the dreams of her Jewish and non-Jewish friends and neighbours during Hitler’s rise to power. At significant personal risks, Charlotte smuggled these nocturnal diaries, written in code, out of Germany. Amanda brought forth the “lost” book, which reminds us of the frightening resonance between Beradt’s historical dream archive and the modern anxieties of our increasingly authoritarian times. Amanda has lectured to psychoanalytic audiences worldwide. She will be joining us via Zoom from London.
9:00 – 10:30 am Keynote – Dr Joyce Slochower
DID WE GO TOO FAR?
This presentation considers the problem of excess in our use of theory. Addressing the value and excesses of the relational ideal, I explore both sides – what relational thinking brings to the consulting room in tandem with the ways we may have gone too far. I then turn a critical lens on my own theory of relational holding and examine its underbelly.
10:30 – 11:00 pm: Morning Tea
11:00 – 12:45 pm: Plenary Speakers – Wiremu Niania, Cultural Therapist, in conjunction with Dr Allister Bush, Psychiatrist

Conference Keynote Speaker

International Guest Speaker: Dr. Joyce Slochower (New York)
Relational Psychoanalyst and Winnicott Scholar.
We’re honoured to have Joyce Slochower deliver our two keynote speeches during the conference. Her first keynote, “Winnicott: Holding, Playing, and Moving Toward Mutuality”, will explore Winnicott’s ideas on clinical process and therapeutic action, focusing on his concepts of holding and regression to dependence
Plenary Presentations
Wiremu Niania & Dr Allister Bush
Wiremu Niania, Cultural Therapist and Dr Allistir Bush, Psychiatrist
Co-authors of the recently published Ngā Kūaha: Voices and Visions in Māori Healing and Psychiatry.
Wiremu NiaNia was apprenticed as a child to a spiritual healer of the NiaNia whānau. In 2005 he became the cultural therapist at Te Whare Mārie, the Māori mental health service at Capital Coast District Health Board. He is now an independent healer, writer and consultant.
Dr Allister Bush is a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist at Te Whare Mārie, the Māori mental health service in Porirua, and at Health Pasifika (integrated Pacific mental health service, Capital Coast District Health Board).
Amanda Rubin
Amanda, our featured presenter, brought forth the “lost” book, which reminds us of the frightening resonance between Beradt’s historical dream archive and the modern anxieties of our increasingly authoritarian times. Amanda has lectured to psychoanalytic audiences around the world. She will be joining us via Zoom.
Over the past three decades, Amanda Rubin has directed and produced documentaries on cultural history, music, the arts, and science. These have been featured on BBC, Channel 4, The History Channel, and Discovery+, among other notable channels. Relevant recent work includes:
- 21st Century Mythologies (Director/Producer), which unpacks the 1957 book “Mythologies” by French philosopher Roland Barthes, laying bare the mythmaking at the heart of consumer culture.
- Qatar- Inside the Pearl (Producer), which travels to the heart of the world’s richest country to reveal an ambitious story of obsessive collecting, cultural curation, and nation-building by the once Bedouin and pearl-diving ruling families.
Amanda Rubin is currently developing a new film, The Third Reich of Dreams, with Snowstorm Productions. This animated drama tells the story of Charlotte Beradt (1907-1986), a Berlin-based journalist who collected the dreams of her Jewish and non-Jewish friends and neighbours during Hitler’s rise to power. At significant personal risks, Charlotte smuggled these nocturnal diaries, written in code, out of Germany.

It was not until the 1960s, while living in New York, that Charlotte revisited the dream diaries and published her book “The Third Reich of Dreams”, in which she explored common symbols, themes, and even warnings that had appeared in the collective unconscious of a traumatised nation.
Charlotte’s dream anthology was out of print for over forty years until Amanda Rubin discovered and acquired the ‘lost’ English language rights. It is thanks to her tenacity and vision that “The Third Reich of Dreams” was once again published in English in April 2025 by Princeton University Press to excellent reviews.
