Being in Harmony: Embodying Te Tiriti as a Tangata Whenua/Pākehā/Tangata Moana Psychotherapist in Aotearoa

Abstract: This presentation explores ethnic identity and lived experiences of becoming and being a psychotherapist in Aotearoa, beyond the boundaries of Western epistemology. The drawing upon cross-cultural perspectives of teaching, learning, ways of knowing and being through whakapapa, upholds Indigenous and Western knowledge systems as taonga. The sharing of inner and outer experiences as a Tangata Whenua/Pākehā/Tangata Moana psychotherapist hopes to provide relevant insight into the tensions, complexities, histories, contemporary realities and opportunities associated with practicing therapeutically in an increasingly multi-ethnic Aotearoa; and aims to contribute to the enriching and widening of the cross-cultural breadth of psychotherapy as a whole.
